About Sohani

I grew up playing with legos and puzzles.

“Integration is a recurring theme in my artwork. The art begins with my life experiences and then incorporates the environment. Often present are other bodies and collaborators, along with their thoughts and desires. Every piece is an evolution from the one prior and is an opportunity to explore. With each new beginning, I consider what I wish to further investigate. Elements are deliberately selected, and learning while beautifying becomes the motivation.”

“Ultimately, my art process is all about play and the interconnectedness of life.”

Sohani Holland, 2020

Sohani Holland is a Los Angeles-based artist using performance and textiles as mediums for documenting and storytelling.

Sohani received her Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University, concentrating in large format photography and printmaking. While there, she became active in theater and fashion, on technical crews and producing events. She later obtained professional designation in Apparel Manufacturing Management from FIDM, which led to an interest in incorporating fibers and fabrics into public art.

Other works include “A Pas de Deux of Color and Shape” award winning fashion editorial for The Cut magazine, “Ceremonials” art and fashion story for LE MILE 7th Anniversary print issue, “Walking Canvases” fashion collaboration at the Jewish Museum of Florida- FIU (Miami, FL), “Devotional” weaving and video installation at The Church Troy (Troy, NY), CON><TACT at Highways Performance Space (Los Angeles, CA), and “The Fabric of You” 2021 collaboration with photographer Djeneba Aduayom for 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair (London, UK).

Drawing from her previous training at Alvin Ailey and Broadway Dance Center, coupled with years of pole and aerial arts, current projects seek to explore the intersection of sound, costuming, and theatrical dance. The aim is to use the body as an instrument for expression through improvisation and instinct. While color, textures, and touch remain a central focus for guiding emotion and creative exploration.
